Reblog: OOOOO….THAT GIVES ME GOOSEBUMPS!

This topic is one I’ve been passionate about for a while, but haven’t found the right way to put it into words. Well, I think my Dad hit the nail on the head with this one.

Gospel Ramblings

“Be who you are.” – Elyse Fitzpatrick

Upon first reading that quote sounds to me like license to indulge my internal interests and desires, irrespective of what they are.  After all, I am somebody, and this quote encourages me to simply be that person.  Perhaps I have been influenced by our cultural phrase, “Searching for myself.” This relates to the idea that I am somebody and that I need to discover who and then be that person.

But when I hear Elyse’s quote in the manner described above I neglect hearing the quote in the context it was said in.  Context, after all, informs meaning. In the first interpretation offered I heard the quote in the context of my American culture.  Elyse said the quote, however, to only those who are Christians.  She says, to you who are Christians, be who you are.

Okay, great, be who I am.  Fine.
